If you’re planning on having your roof replaced, you probably want to know how long the process is going to take. The truth is that it varies. Most jobs take between 1-3 days to complete.

What Goes Into the Roof Replacement Timeframe

There are two primary factors to consider when asking the question “how long does a roof replacement take“:

1. Project Size and Scope

The first factor to consider when determining how long a roof replacement will take is the size and scope of the project. As a rule of thumb, larger roofs are going to take longer to complete, while smaller roofs may take only one day. Different roofing systems require more or less labor depending on the materials. The number of tear-off layers, roof pitch, roof details such as flashings or penetrations, and square footage also play a role in the length of a project. Furthermore, if damaged decking is found after a tear-off, the replacement of wood substrate may add to the length of time we work on your roof. When it comes to the type of roof you are having installed, there can be a little discrepancy in the amount of time the project takes. Shingle roofs tend to be the quickest and easiest, with metal, rubber, and TPO roofs typically taking a bit longer due to the technicality of installation.

2. Time of Year

The season in which you are having your roof replaced often impacts the length of time it takes to complete the project. Summer conditions are the easiest in which to work. The days are longer so our crews can work longer days. Typically, the only thing we have to work around in the warm season is rain in the forecast. Winter jobs, on the other hand, tend to take a bit longer due to the shorter days and harsher weather conditions. The cold temperatures of winter mean materials are less pliable and, therefore, more difficult to install. Certain roof systems are not installed during the winter months at all, notably rubber roofs. The rubber material needs warm temperatures in order to be installed. Cold temperatures prevent the pliability needed for proper installation. As such, it is best to wait until the warmer months to have a rubber membrane roof installed. TPO roofs, on the other hand, have the benefit of easy installation in any season.
